They put the job out a week ago and it closes Aug 15th. One good thing is that it is internal only. So only city employees can apply for it. I have started going to his weekly meetings with our boss as well. My boss didn't have all of his paperwork filled out properly so he has a few more weeks until he can retire.

Like others had stated, its about how much the company wants you too. You have been working with this person for a while and already filling in for him. For most business owners/management, it makes sense to hire internal and hire someone that already has experience in the role
