I think that as long as the badge goes along with performance modifications, it's fine. Nothing wrong with upgrades done to a car in my opinion, and if it's significant ones compared to the base model, the M badge is deserved.
For example, the new X5M and X6M obviously deserve the badge.
The line has to be drawn somewhere, otherwise they should have just stuck the the M1/3/5/6 which were the originals since the 90's or earlier.
People probably complained about the M coupe/roadster when it was going to be introduced for the same reasons, but that worked out right?
