Well in the case of the E46, the SMG and 6MT actually DID use the same Getrag transmission except for a differently machined bellhousing and of course the extra hardware for the computer to perform the shifts. But yes I agree with your overarching point. I was guilty once of believing that a slush box with paddles was best of both worlds with no drawbacks. Then I actually started driving manual.
