Not sure I've explained it properly then based on your response.
The F20 has a drainage channel on the roof of the car, but does not have one around the doors.
The doors just have a rubber seal, and that's it.
So, the rain runs down the side of the car, and must pool / collect in the seal, when the door is opened, that water disperses into the car.
On my E90, it has a drainage channel on the roof, but it also has another around the door, as well as the rubber seal.
