In the new Reef the Lost Cauze album, A Vicious Cycle, someone makes a statement at the end of a song saying that getting into the game is like finding out there is no Santa Clause. People don't really go around carrying 10k in their pockets, they don't really kill dudes on a nightly basis, etc.
Hip Hop shouldn't always be taken literally. Its basis is the mastery of language and the crafting of metaphors, hooks, bars, etc. No, I didn't grow up in the hood, but I've had my share of struggles and conflicts that I had to overcome, and that's what hip hop stands for: the ability to work through your tough times and come out successful.
I'm sure many people can relate to that.
