Whats not to like?
BMW have several manufacturer benefits. Customers might get some of those as well (lower price, easier for shops to repair and have spare parts too)
Customer benefits over 4-cylinder
-Lower fuel consumption (and lower Co2 taxes for some countries)
-Better sound. Sportier sound! (More like a 6 cylinder)
Two big arguments for me!
Performance
-Lower weight
-Better weight distribution
Other:
-Maybe easier to work in the engine bay as well with all that space..
BMWs 1,6 sylinders have proved to be great. I don't think cutting down on 1 cylinder and only 0,1l displacement volume will make it worse with the modern technology.
Please put these engines in ALL lower powered 2-series!
