I have this exact issue right now.
BMW said it was normal after an extended stay and the dealers following a service. The dealer sent a recording of the noise to BMW UK. The response (which I have in writing) was, "this is a normal for this engine".
I don't agree, it sounds terrible.

How did you get the warranty work through?????
