Only if it has a flat plane crankshaft. A 90-degree crank will sound an octave higher and give you that nice screaming howl at high RPM's.
The new M5 has a weird exhaust setup that kind of emulates the sound of a flat plane, but then it also has the electronic sound that simulates a V10.
Evidently, electronic engine noise is all the rage (even Audi is doing it, but out the exhaust rather than the speakers) and rest assured this new 3-cylinder BMW will sound like it has a lot more cylinders than it does.
Disable the active sound and it'll sound like a lawn mower.
