Some say it does not really like idle (low?) RPM either. High RPM (once warmed!) "cleans" the engine, but it should be avoided to use for unnecessarily long time, of course.

It's all the power way: once you've reached the maximum power it makes some sense to use it instead of dropping down to the maximum torque, which is just the "means" to gain the power quickly, isn't it?

It's the maximum power range extension, I suppose. I drove a loan 320i in double sport mode (the car, as sport+ of my choice wasn't there and the 8-speed auto gearbox). In kickdown it rocked the tachometer between 5000 and 6500 RPM (approx.). The acceleration was just amazing.

116i has a "secret" (turbine pressure) boost mode with 240 Nm available in 1500-3500 RPM.
