Well I took the car in to get the problem sorted. Went for a drive with one of the mechanics who heard and acknowledged the problem.
They had the car ready for me by the end of the day... didn't have any info for me other than they tightened a few things up and the problem was gone.
It sounded fine on the way out, but 20 minutes later I heard the knock again. Needless to say it's going back.
It's hard to describe the noise... it only really happens going over certain rough surfaces or large road reflectors.
