I noticed this also. I had some pretty thick snock/ice on there the other day and the wiper area cleared very fast. What i did notice, however is that the outer areas did clear, but at a slower rate. It deffinately looked like something was melting it (didnt appear to be heat from inside the car as ice on the side windows wasnt defrosting). If you look closely at the lines within the rear window youll see a few breaks in the contacts as to seperate these areas. I wonder whether the outer areas do defrost, but just at a much slower rate - possibly to help with ecodynamics maybe?
