But you're right, it's really dangerous, any possible accident no drive to avoid it....
But the engine is spending fuel while you are coasting, just like it would do while just rolling along in top gear. If you go off the throttle, the fuel is cut, but you will also lose kinetic energy faster.

The important thing is to stay off the brakes if you want to save fuel, as they only turn your energy into wasted heat.

And what is the danger of coasting? What trouble can it get you into?
