The kickdown feature has been with us for many years in auto transmissions. All part of driving an auto transmission, the same as the brake pedal can be used to get down changes for engine braking, or the throttle can be modulated to hold a gear in some circumstances.
Using kickdown doesn't give more engine power, as full throttle (WOT) does that anyway, it is simply a way to instigate a down change (or more) on the throttle pedal.
