I thought it was only a major problem if you mixed tyre sizes. They must be the same size, spec, speed rating etc... as each other, as far as branding goes I don't see it being a problem for everyday driving. Like the OP tho, I'd prefer the same tyre on both sides of the same axle to prevent unbalance. I would, however maintain either directional or non-directional patterns, so find a match for what you have ATM.
