Everything John said is dead on.

Personally, I would still stay with the primes. But John's comments make sense.

Another reason to shoot cars with longer lenses is that you want a certain amount of compression which you get when shooting at larger focal lengths.

Here is an example. One was shot at 35mm(not such a great shot) and the other at 200mm. Can you see the difference in the background?
