X can be both MPG and L/100 km. For example if your MPG is 40:

4,55/(40*1,6)*100 = 7,1

Then you can flip it around

4,55/(7,1*1,6)*100 = 40
And this equation can also be simplified. Simply start out with 284, and divide by the number you want to convert. :-)
